Where it came from
The 009-1 Special was released in 2007 as a direct-to-video conclusion to the 009-1 anime series, which is based on the manga by the legendary Shotaro Ishinomori. The original manga, serialized in the late 1960s, explored themes of Cold War espionage through the lens of a cyborg protagonist, Mylene Hoffman. This special was produced by Aniplex to provide a definitive end to the animated adaptation, capturing the retro-futuristic, noir-inspired aesthetic that defined Ishinomori's unique vision of science fiction.
The animation was handled by the studio AIC, focusing on the slick, stylized action sequences that were a hallmark of the source material. The character design aimed to bridge the gap between the aesthetic of the 1960s source and modern animation techniques, emphasizing a gritty, cinematic atmosphere. It was received by fans of the genre as a faithful, if brief, expansion of the series' lore, remaining a niche but respected entry in the catalog of works influenced by Ishinomori's pioneering contributions to the manga medium.
