22/7, often referred to as the Nanabun no Nijyuuni project, emerged in 2020 as a multimedia endeavor conceptualized by Yasushi Akimoto, the producer best known for the AKB48 idol group model. The television series, produced by A-1 Pictures, was designed to bridge the gap between traditional idol culture and digital anime performance. It centers on a group of girls brought together by a mysterious talent agency, each representing a distinct archetype meant to appeal to a wide demographic of anime fans while integrating high-fidelity character animation with voice acting performances.

The character designs were overseen by a rotating team of prominent industry illustrators, including Yukiko Horiguchi, who is celebrated for her work on K-On!. The visual aesthetic sought to balance the grounded, slice-of-life atmosphere of the group's dramatic conflicts with the heightened, stylized reality of their stage personas. Upon its release, the series was noted for its unique commitment to the 'mixed-media' format, where the voice actresses themselves were required to perform as their characters in real-world concerts and promotional events.
