Academy City is a highly developed place in terms of technology. It is said to be 20 to 30 years ahead of the rest of the world, and 80% of its 2.3 million residents are students. The focus of studies here is directed towards esper powers. Misaka Mikoto, one of the top level espers in town, shares a room with Kuroko Shirai, another high level esper who is a member of Judgement, a law enforcing agency composed of students. Both attend Tokiwadai, a private school reserved for the high-leveled and the rich. Kuroko's partner at Judgement, Kazari Uiharu, is a low level esper who studies at Sakugawa middle school. Her best friend and classmate there is Ruiko Saten, a level zero, one who has no esper powers. Together, the four encounter several adventures in the exciting scientific town.

Where it came from
A Certain Scientific Railgun was produced by studio J.C.Staff and premiered in 2009 as an anime adaptation of the manga series written by Kazuma Kamachi. The series serves as a spin-off to the A Certain Magical Index franchise, shifting the focus to Mikoto Misaka, a high-ranking esper living in the scientifically advanced Academy City. The production aimed to expand the franchise's lore by exploring the technological side of the setting, contrasting the supernatural elements of the original series with a grounded focus on esper development and social dynamics.
The adaptation was directed by Tatsuyuki Nagai, who worked to balance the series' lighthearted slice-of-life elements with its more intense science-fiction action sequences. Character designs were adapted for animation by Yuichi Tanaka, who aimed to preserve the distinct aesthetic of the source material while ensuring the fluid motion required for the show's signature supernatural battles. Upon its release, the series was well-received for its character development and the internal consistency of its world-building, eventually leading to a long-running franchise that includes multiple sequels and original video animations.
