A Portrait of Keiichi Tanaami

A Portrait of Keiichi Tanaami is a documentary film centered on the life and multifaceted career of the legendary Japanese pop artist and psychedelic pioneer. Produced to capture the kinetic energy and surrealist aesthetic that defined Tanaami’s work from the 1960s onwards, the film serves as a visual archive of his transition from graphic design and advertising to experimental animation and fine art. It provides an intimate look at how he synthesized American pop culture, war-time memories, and avant-garde sensibilities into a distinct visual language.

The documentary was crafted to reflect the artist’s characteristic layering of motifs, often incorporating his signature use of neon colors, distorted figures, and recurring imagery like goldfish and pine trees. By documenting his creative process and his influence on contemporary Japanese subcultures, the filmmakers sought to contextualize Tanaami’s role as a bridge between the post-war artistic movements and the digital age. It is regarded by critics and art historians as a vital resource for understanding the evolution of the psychedelic aesthetic in Japanese contemporary art.
