In a remote corner of the planet Arcana, Palme, a sentient android crafted from a mystical wood that is said to absorb the memories of the civilizations it roots in, is awakened by Koram, a wounded warrior from the Sol tribe. Entrusting him with the mystical 'Egg of the Roof', she implores Palme to take it to the legendary realm of Tamas.
Galvanized with purpose for his existence, he accepts Koram's quest to deliver the relic to its source: the center of the planet, which is threatened by a malevolent and destructive force.

Where it came from
A Tree of Palme was released in 2002 as the directorial effort of Takashi Nakamura, a veteran animator known for his work on iconic films like Akira and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Produced by Palm Studio, the film was conceived as an ambitious, long-form adaptation of the Pinocchio myth, filtered through a surrealist lens. It emerged during a period of experimentation in Japanese animation, intended to challenge standard storytelling conventions by blending traditional folklore with deeply melancholic, existential themes.
The visual design of the film is noted for its intricate, often stark aesthetic, which emphasizes the unsettling transformation of the protagonist, Palme. Nakamura sought to move beyond the whimsical tropes of classic children’s literature, opting instead for a somber atmosphere that explores themes of loss and the search for humanity. While the film was praised by critics for its bold artistic direction and technical prowess, it received a modest reception upon release, ultimately becoming a cult classic celebrated for its uncompromising creative vision.
