Where it came from
Ai Mai! Moe Can Change! originated as an original video animation produced by Frontier Works in 2012, serving as a promotional tie-in for the popular mobile social game of the same name. Developed during a period when smartphone gaming began to heavily influence anime production, the project sought to translate the game's core mechanic—customizing the appearance and personality of an android character—into a narrative format. By highlighting the playful interaction between a human protagonist and his customizable robotic companion, the OVA aimed to capture the specific aesthetic trends of the early 2010s moé culture.
The production design leaned heavily into bright, expressive character art intended to replicate the mobile game’s visual style, focusing on high-contrast color palettes and exaggerated personality traits. Because it was designed primarily to serve the existing player base of the game, it was received as a lighthearted, niche title rather than a standalone narrative work. While it did not alter the broader landscape of the anime industry, it remains a distinct artifact of the era’s efforts to bridge the gap between burgeoning mobile platform gaming and traditional character-driven animation.
