Ai Tenchi Muyo!

Ai Tenchi Muyo! was produced by AIC in 2014 to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the long-running Tenchi Muyo! franchise. It was commissioned by the city of Takahashi in Okayama Prefecture as part of a regional revitalization project, aiming to promote local tourism by featuring various landmarks and settings within the city as the backdrop for the anime. The narrative shifts the focus from the grand space-opera antics of the original series to a more grounded, episodic format centered around Tenchi Masaki working as a teacher in a girls' school.

The series retains the characteristic character designs established by the franchise’s history, though it opts for a streamlined aesthetic suited for its five-minute episode format. While the experimental nature of the short-form storytelling and the educational tone drew a mixed response from long-time fans who were accustomed to the expansive sci-fi adventures of the previous iterations, the series remains a notable curiosity in the anime landscape for its direct integration with Japanese regional promotion and local government sponsorship.
