Amazing Nurse Nanako

Amazing Nurse Nanako, or Nanako SOS, was produced by Genco and released as a six-part original video animation (OVA) series beginning in 1999. Created during the height of the late nineties anime boom, the project was designed as a lighthearted sci-fi parody centered on a clumsy nursing student who is recruited into a secret organization. The series drew its charm from its blend of slapstick comedy, medical tropes, and the whimsical, futuristic aesthetic characteristic of the era's experimental OVA productions.

The character design for Nanako was spearheaded by the renowned artist Koji Kumeta, who brought a distinctive, rounded aesthetic that emphasized the series' comedic tone. While the show was intended to be a cheerful, standalone romp, it faced a fragmented release schedule and struggled to gain widespread critical traction compared to the major genre-defining series of its time. Despite this, it remains a nostalgic touchstone for collectors of late-nineties niche animation who appreciate its unique synthesis of character-driven humor and classic sci-fi tropes.
