Amefuri Kozou

Amefuri Kozou was produced by Tooniverse in 1983 as an original video animation, a format that was beginning to gain traction in the Japanese market during the early 1980s. The story draws inspiration from traditional Japanese folklore, specifically the yōkai known as the 'rain-begging priest,' a mischievous spirit often depicted as a young boy carrying an umbrella or a lantern. By adapting these cultural legends into the burgeoning medium of home video, Tooniverse aimed to bring classic supernatural tales to a contemporary audience of youth and animation enthusiasts.

The visual direction of this production reflects the distinctive stylistic trends of early 80s independent animation studios, emphasizing hand-drawn character designs that balance whimsy with the slightly eerie atmosphere inherent in folk horror. While the production is considered a niche piece of animation history today, it serves as a representative example of how smaller studios utilized regional mythologies to carve out a space in the direct-to-video market, focusing on atmospheric storytelling and character-driven narratives over the high-octane action common in television series of that era.
