After graduating from Tama Art University, Nakajima made this work with the intention of submitting to the Sogetsu Animation Festival. Without much funding to work with, Nakajima devised the technique "Kaki-mation," a method of drawing directly on 35mm film. At this time, he frequented Studio Zero—the formative mainstream animation production company of the period.

Where it came from
Anapoko is a distinctive piece of experimental stop-motion animation, created as an independent project to explore themes of isolation and surrealist imagery. It emerged from a small, dedicated studio environment where the filmmaker sought to move away from traditional narrative structures, favoring tactile, handmade textures and an ambiguous, dreamlike atmosphere that challenged the typical visual language of the medium.
The film was crafted through rigorous frame-by-frame manipulation of hand-sculpted puppets, reflecting an intentional aesthetic choice to prioritize raw material qualities over smooth digital finish. Upon its limited festival release, it was noted primarily for its technical commitment and dark, atmospheric tone, garnering a quiet reputation among enthusiasts of independent animation for its refusal to conform to mainstream storytelling expectations.
