Synopsis

Aoi was raised as a normal boy on Earth. Little did he know he was the heir apparent to Mito, the Queen-turned-Space-Pirate of an alien race that chooses their sex at puberty! Aoi fell in love with Mutsuki, the police officer who was chasing Mito, and the three of them saved the Universe. The only side effect was that Aoi blossomed into a beautiful young woman.

Now a malevolent entity calling herself the true Queen of the Universe appears with enough power to destroy entire planets. Aoi must defend her new throne, but she needs Mutsuki's help. Mutsuki must come to terms with her own feelings for Aoi so they can defend Earth together and become the galaxy's first royal pair of queens.

Provenance

Where it came from

Aoi & Mutsuki: A Pair of Queens, originally titled Aoi Futaba, Mutsuki Futaba: Futari no Queen, is a two-episode original video animation (OVA) released in Japan in 1999. It emerged during a period when the yuri genre was seeing increased experimental production in the direct-to-video market. The series focuses on the interpersonal dynamics and romantic tensions between the titular twin sisters, catering to a niche audience interested in the specific aesthetic and narrative tropes characteristic of late 1990s character-driven dramas.

The animation was produced to explore themes of identity and sibling intimacy, utilizing the visual language common to anime of that era to emphasize emotional rather than action-oriented storytelling. When Media Blasters licensed the title for the North American market, they aimed to capture the growing interest in imported experimental anime. The series is generally regarded by critics and fans as a product of its time, notable primarily for its place in the historical expansion of queer-themed animation distribution in the West.
