Armitage III

Released in 1995 as a four-part original video animation series, Armitage III emerged during the height of the mid-nineties cyberpunk boom in Japanese animation. Produced by AIC and directed by Hiroyuki Ochi, the series was conceived as a gritty, action-oriented investigation into the nature of artificial intelligence and identity, heavily influenced by Western science fiction classics like Blade Runner. Its narrative centers on Naomi Armitage, a cybernetic Third-Type android navigating a discriminatory society on Mars, which served as a backdrop for exploring themes of autonomy and human-machine coexistence.

The character design, spearheaded by Hiroyuki Ochi, moved away from the softer aesthetics of the era to embrace a sharp, utilitarian, and high-contrast look suitable for its noir-inspired tone. Upon release, the series was noted for its polished animation and ambitious pacing, which helped it gain a significant cult following in international markets. It remains a notable example of the high-budget OVA model that defined much of the international export strategy for anime during the mid-nineties.
