Arpeggio of Blue Steel

Arpeggio of Blue Steel, known in Japan as Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio, began as a manga series by Ark Performance before being adapted into a twelve-episode television anime series by Studio SANZIGEN in 2013. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic future where mysterious warships known as the Fleet of Fog have blockaded humanity from the seas, utilizing advanced technology and artificial intelligence avatars known as Mental Models. The narrative focuses on the crew of the submarine I-401 as they navigate political and military conflicts to protect a payload that could change the fate of the world.

The production is notable for being one of the first major anime projects to transition entirely to 3D computer-generated imagery for its character models and mecha. Director Seiji Kishi and the team at SANZIGEN aimed to bridge the gap between traditional cel animation aesthetics and the capabilities of 3D modeling. Upon its release, the series was received with curiosity and eventual acclaim, as audiences grew accustomed to its distinct visual style, which allowed for fluid, intricate naval combat sequences that would have been difficult to achieve with traditional 2D animation techniques.
