Where it came from
Ashiaraiyashiki no Juunin-tachi, or The Residents of the Foot-Washing Mansion, originated as a manga series by Minarai before being adapted into a two-episode original video animation (OVA) by Studio NOA in 2010. The story centers on a protagonist who moves into a mysterious apartment complex inhabited by a diverse cast of supernatural beings, blending elements of urban fantasy with absurdist comedy. The production captures the chaotic, genre-bending energy of the source material, focusing on the comedic interactions between human residents and the varied mythological entities sharing their living space.
The character designs were intended to reflect the eclectic and often grotesque nature of the mythological creatures, ranging from traditional Japanese yokai to western-inspired monsters. The OVA was produced as a niche title aimed at existing fans of the manga, aiming to translate the author's distinct, frenetic visual style into animation. While it did not receive a widespread international release, it is noted by enthusiasts of the 2010s cult anime scene for its commitment to the irreverent and surreal tone established in the original publication.
