Where it came from
Ashita no Eleven-tachi was released in 1979 as a television special based on the beloved sports manga Ashita no Joe by Ikki Kajiwara and Tetsuya Chiba. Created to bridge the narrative gap between the original series and the then-upcoming sequel, the special serves as a condensed retelling of the iconic journey of Joe Yabuki, a troubled youth who finds purpose and identity through the grueling world of professional boxing.
The production sought to capture the gritty, atmospheric intensity of the original manga, utilizing the recognizable aesthetic of the era’s animation studios. While the design language remains faithful to Chiba's distinctive, emotive character work, the special was received primarily as a nostalgic retrospective for existing fans, designed to reignite interest in the franchise before the more ambitious animation projects of the early 1980s.
