Aura Battler Dunbine was produced by the animation studio Sunrise and first aired in 1983. Created by director Yoshiyuki Tomino, the series marked a significant departure from the realistic, grounded military mecha tropes established by his earlier work, such as Mobile Suit Gundam. By blending the high-tech aesthetics of mecha with the traditional conventions of high fantasy—incorporating concepts like swords, sorcery, and insectoid biological machines—Tomino sought to challenge the boundaries of the robot genre.

The distinctive mecha designs, characterized by their organic, chitinous exteriors and insect-like wings, were conceptualized by mechanical designer Yutaka Izubuchi. These designs broke away from the blocky, metal-clad silhouettes typical of the era, drawing inspiration from nature to create machines that felt alive.
