Synopsis

Adapted from the 2005 adults-only superhuman battle action visual novel game Ayakashi. Ayakashi is a parasite life force that gives superpowers to its host, taking in return the host's entire life force. Kusaka Yuu is a student that lost his will to live after the death of a dear childhood friend, until the day a mysterious girl, named Yoake Eim, appears. From that moment on, his life would never be the same again. Hunted by Ayakashi and their hosts, the power within Yuu awakens and a never ending battle begins.

Provenance

Where it came from

Produced by Studio Tokyo Kids and released in 2007, Ayakashi is an atmospheric supernatural anime series that explores Japanese folklore through a collection of loosely connected tales. Emerging during a period when studios were increasingly experimenting with stylized, theatrical animation techniques to modernize classic ghost stories, the series aims to capture the eerie, dreamlike quality of traditional kaidan, or Japanese horror tales.

The series is noted for its distinct visual direction, which utilizes bold color palettes and flattened perspectives reminiscent of ukiyo-e woodblock prints to heighten the sense of dread and otherworldliness. While it remains a niche entry in the horror anime genre, it is frequently praised by critics for its artistic commitment to aesthetic atmosphere over traditional jump-scares, serving as a thematic precursor to later experimental horror anthologies.
