Ba Xian Guo Hai

Ba Xian Guo Hai, or The Eight Immortals Cross the Sea, is a television adaptation rooted in the rich tapestry of Chinese mythology. Produced by Asia Television (ATV) in Hong Kong and released in 1985, the series was created during a vibrant era for Hong Kong television, when networks were heavily investing in elaborate fantasy dramas to capture the imagination of domestic and regional audiences. The narrative draws directly from the classic Ming Dynasty novel, following the legendary quest of the eight immortals as they navigate celestial trials and human vanity.

The series is noted for its ambitious use of early special effects and practical costume design, which sought to translate the ethereal nature of the Taoist deities onto the screen. Directed by Ding Liang and featuring a widely recognized theme song performed by Yip Chun-chun, the production was well-received for its earnest portrayal of traditional values and folklore. It remains a hallmark of 1980s Hong Kong television, reflecting a time when regional folklore was standard appointment viewing for families across the territory.
