Where it came from
Baby★LOVE was produced by Studio Comet and released as an original video animation in 1997. It is based on the shōjo manga series by Ayumi Shiina, which was serialized in Ribon magazine during the mid-nineties. The adaptation emerged at the height of the magazine's popularity, reflecting the era's focus on school-life romances and the domestic concerns of middle-school protagonists navigating early relationships.
The character design and visual direction for the OVA aimed to capture the polished, emotive aesthetic characteristic of nineties shōjo animation. By condensing the narrative into an OVA format, the studio sought to highlight the most poignant emotional beats of the original manga. While the production is relatively modest in scope, it remains a noted example of the era's approach to translating manga-style panels into animated sequences for an audience of young teenagers.
