Where it came from
Bar Kiraware Yasai was produced by Studio Gathering and aired in 2015 as an experimental short-form anime series. The project was designed to anthropomorphize vegetables that are often disliked or picked out of meals by children, casting them as patrons of a refined, late-night bar setting. This juxtaposition of mundane food items and the weary, sophisticated atmosphere of a salaryman's haunt was intended to add a layer of dark humor to the educational intent of the show.
The character designs focus on giving human-like, melancholic expressions to vegetables like green peppers and onions, reflecting a quirky aesthetic typical of Japanese public broadcasting and niche late-night programming. While the series did not achieve widespread commercial mainstream success, it is recognized by animation enthusiasts for its idiosyncratic creative direction and its unconventional approach to dietary themes.
