Basilisk: The Ouka Ninja Scrolls

Basilisk: The Ouka Ninja Scrolls was produced by Seven Arcs Pictures and released in 2018 as a direct sequel to the acclaimed 2005 series Basilisk: The Kouga Ninja Scrolls. Set ten years after the events of its predecessor, the narrative follows a new generation of ninja as they navigate political upheaval and the lingering trauma of the previous conflict. The project aimed to capture the dark, historical fantasy aesthetic that defined the original series, rooting its tone in the brutal, fatalistic tradition of Japanese jidaigeki storytelling.

The series is based on the novel The Ouka Ninja Scrolls by Masaki Yamada, which served as a sequel to Futaro Yamada’s classic 1958 novel, The Kouga Ninja Scrolls. The production faced a significant challenge in balancing the legacy of the original anime’s iconic visual style with a shift in directorial focus. While the series attempted to expand the philosophical exploration of the Iga and Kouga clans, it received mixed critical reception, with viewers often contrasting its distinct pacing and character development against the high-stakes intensity of the 2005 adaptation.
