Where it came from
Beauty Water is a 2020 South Korean animated horror film produced by Studio Animal, based on the popular webtoon 'Tales of the Unusual' by Oh Seong-dae. The film explores the dark obsession with physical perfection, centering on a protagonist who discovers a miracle liquid that allows her to mold her body and face into any shape she desires. This adaptation marked a significant entry into adult-oriented animation for the Korean industry, aiming to translate the eerie, unsettling atmosphere of the original digital comic into a feature-length cinematic experience.
The aesthetic design focuses on body horror and psychological suspense, utilizing a blend of 2D and 3D animation to highlight the grotesque transformations of the characters. By leaning into the uncanny nature of the 'Beauty Water' itself, the production team sought to critique contemporary beauty standards and the extreme lengths individuals may go to for social validation. The film received attention on the international festival circuit for its bold narrative choices and its unflinching look at the toxic nature of vanity.
