The Yamada sisters, Kyo (15) and Asu (9), are students studying in secondary and primary schools respectively. Their mother passed away and their father ran away after incurring gambling debts. Despite the difficult circumstances, both of them decide to overcome the unhappiness and welcome their days with enthusiasm and pride. Fortunately, with the change in the law system several years ago, Kyo is able to study and simultaneously take temporary jobs (such as distributing newspapers and tutoring) to make ends meet. On the other hand, Asu takes charge of household chores, prepares meals, and manages the finances to assist her older sister. Surrounding them are also good and kind neighbors such as the novelist, Saegusa-san, and the aunt at the public bath who watch over them. Although life is difficult and at times painful, the sisters are happy to have each other.

Where it came from
Binbou Shimai Monogatari, which translates to Tale of the Poor Sisters, was produced by Toei Animation and aired in 2006. The series is based on the manga by Kazuki Kakimoto, focusing on the lives of two young orphaned sisters, Kyo and Asu, who struggle to maintain their bond while navigating extreme poverty and the demands of everyday life. The anime is characterized by a gentle, melancholic tone that prioritizes character emotional development over dramatic plot twists, reflecting a broader mid-2000s trend of 'iyashikei' or healing animation.
The character designs and animation direction were handled to emphasize a soft, humble aesthetic that mirrors the sisters' difficult but resilient circumstances. While the series garnered praise for its earnest storytelling and the relatable struggle of its protagonists, it remains a modest entry in Toei’s extensive catalog, often cited by fans for its sincerity rather than high-octane spectacle. It is remembered primarily as a poignant, character-driven work that successfully captures a sense of warmth amidst hardship.
