In late-nineteenth century England, one year and three months after the dramatic conclusion of the original series, Kuroshitsuji II introduces a new butler and young master. The sadistic yet cheerful Alois Trancy has faced some harsh times. He was kidnapped as a baby, and was forced to work in a village as a slave. Gradually, he lost his parents, his brother, and everyone he knew. Alois eventually returned home and became the head of his mansion, but seemed to exhibit some strange behavior ever since. Even more curiously, he returned with Claude Faustus, an enigmatic, emotionless butler with unfathomable talent...

Where it came from
Black Butler II was produced by A-1 Pictures and released in 2010 as a direct follow-up to the 2008 anime adaptation of Yana Toboso’s manga series. Unlike the first season, which adhered more closely to the source material, this series introduced an original narrative trajectory focusing on a new dynamic between the butler Sebastian Michaelis and his young charge, Alois Trancy. The production sought to expand the franchise’s gothic aesthetic, leaning further into the dark, Victorian-inspired fantasy themes that had defined the initial success of the series.
The character designs for the second season were handled by Minako Shiba, who aimed to maintain the series' signature sharp, elegant visual style while introducing new, contrasting character archetypes. Upon its release, the series generated significant discussion within the fan community due to its departure from the manga's established plot. While it received mixed critical reactions regarding its narrative choices compared to the source material, it remains a notable entry in the broader Black Butler franchise for its bold stylistic choices and its contribution to the series' continued popularity in the early 2010s.
