Ichigo Kurosaki is a rather normal high school student apart from the fact he has the ability to see ghosts. This ability never impacted his life in a major way until the day he encounters the Shinigami Kuchiki Rukia, who saves him and his family's lives from a Hollow, a corrupt spirit that devours human souls.
Wounded during the fight against the Hollow, Rukia chooses the only option available to defeat the monster and passes her Shinigami powers to Ichigo. Now forced to act as a substitute until Rukia recovers, Ichigo hunts down the Hollows that plague his town.

Where it came from
Bleach was adapted into a television series by Studio Pierrot, premiering in 2004 as an iteration of Tite Kubo's long-running manga series published in Weekly Shōnen Jump. The production emerged during the height of the mid-2000s shōnen boom, aiming to capture the series' distinctive blend of supernatural action, urban fantasy, and character-driven drama. Studio Pierrot leveraged its experience with high-octane ensemble series to visualize the soul-reaper mythos and the stark, fashion-forward aesthetic that defined Kubo’s original illustrations.
The animation direction focused on translating the manga’s iconic silhouettes and stylized combat sequences into a long-form broadcast format. Upon its release, the series became a defining entry in the 'Big Three' of its era, noted for its rhythmic pacing and a landmark musical score by Shirō Sagisu. It was received as a cornerstone of international anime popularity, significantly influencing the global accessibility of Japanese animation throughout the 2000s.
