Malice comes up abruptly. As if it is blinking. Capricious like a flapping insect. One day a young hermit finds a winged insect and crushes it out of disgust. Meanwhile, the elephant sees the whole situation but says nothing. From that day on, the boy is chased by shadows of the winged insects.

Where it came from
Blink in the Desert was produced by Geidai Animation in 2021 as part of an initiative to highlight emerging talent within the Tokyo University of the Arts graduate program. The film emerged during a period of introspection for the studio, focusing on minimalist storytelling and the atmospheric potential of hand-drawn digital techniques. It was designed to capture a sense of transient isolation, utilizing sparse visual palettes to emphasize the stark, shifting landscapes of its titular setting.
The production sought to blend traditional animation pacing with modern existential themes, aiming for an aesthetic that felt simultaneously grounded and surreal. Upon its release, it was well-received within the independent animation circuit for its technical restraint and focus on character-driven quietude rather than high-octane spectacle. Critics noted the deliberate pacing as a deliberate artistic choice intended to evoke a meditative experience for the viewer.
