Where it came from
Boku no Me wa Neko no Me, or My Eyes Are Cat's Eyes, was produced by NHK and aired as part of the network's long-running Minna no Uta program. The segment originated in the late 1980s, reflecting the era's experimental approach to short-form animation broadcast on Japanese public television. It gained significant cultural recognition for its haunting aesthetic and the evocative, melancholic quality of the music and visuals, which diverged from typical children's programming of the period.
The animation was conceptualized to blend surreal imagery with the nostalgic tone characteristic of the Minna no Uta series. Created during a period when NHK was actively commissioning diverse visual artists for their musical segments, the piece is often cited by fans of Japanese animation for its unique, dreamlike atmosphere. Its reception solidified it as a cult favorite among viewers who grew up with NHK's daytime scheduling, eventually leading to its preservation in various retrospective media compilations.
