Where it came from
The 2019 adaptation of Boogiepop and Others was produced by Studio Madhouse to coincide with the twentieth anniversary of Kouhei Kadono’s influential light novel series. Directed by Shingo Natsume, the series was designed to revisit the fractured, nonlinear narrative of the original 1998 novel, which is widely credited with helping launch the light novel boom in Japan. The studio aimed to translate the series' dark urban fantasy themes and psychological complexity for a modern audience while maintaining the atmospheric, moody aesthetic of the source material.
The character designs were handled by Hidehiko Sawada, who sought to adapt Kouji Ogata’s original iconic illustrations into a fluid, contemporary animation style. Upon release, the series was noted for its deliberate pacing and intricate structure, which divided opinion among viewers accustomed to more linear storytelling. It remains a significant entry in the psychological horror genre, serving as both a stylistic homage to the original 2000 anime and a distinct reinterpretation of the mystery surrounding the titular persona.
