Synopsis

In 2010, an evil Minus-Energy Lifeform called Draias has made his way to Earth, and allies himself with an evil scientist known as Dr Jango to create chaos and ruin the planet. A unit dispatched from the peacekeeping Space Police Force follows him to Earth, and their leader Fighbird inhabits the body of an advanced android built by Dr. Hiroshi Amano, becoming Yuutarou Katori. Katori and his team, inhabiting various Earth vehicles and accompanied by Dr. Amano's grandchildren Kenta and Haruka, fight against Draias's forces while adapting to life on Earth.

Provenance

Where it came from

Brave of the Sun Fighbird was produced by Sunrise and aired in Japan in 1991 as the second entry in the Brave series. Following the success of Brave Exkizer, the series sought to solidify the franchise's identity by blending traditional mecha tropes with themes of artificial intelligence and humanity's potential. It was conceived as a vehicle for Takara to market transforming toys, resulting in a design philosophy that prioritized complex, intricate mechanical configurations.

The character design and overall aesthetic were spearheaded by industry veteran Kunio Okawara, who is renowned for his work on the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise. Okawara aimed for a more heroic and colorful silhouette that diverged from the gritty, realistic military styles common in the 1980s. Upon release, the show was well-received by its target youth demographic, praised for its engaging episodic structure and the imaginative design of the Fighbird transformation sequence.
