Bungaku Shoujo: Kyou no Oyatsu - Hatsukoi

Bungaku Shoujo: Kyou no Oyatsu - Hatsukoi is an original video animation released in 2009 by Studio Production I.G, serving as a companion piece to the light novel series by Mizuki Nomura. Produced to capitalize on the success of the novels, the short film functions as a lighthearted vignette focused on the character Toko Amano, the self-proclaimed 'literature girl' who consumes physical pages of books to satisfy her literary cravings. The production aimed to expand the anime franchise's reach before the release of the feature film, adopting a gentler, more episodic aesthetic.

The character designs were handled by Shinichi Yamaoka, who translated the detailed illustrations from the original novels into a cohesive, fluid animation style. The visual approach leans into the 'iyashikei' or healing subgenre, emphasizing quiet, evocative environments and character-driven interactions. Upon its release, the OVA was well-received by the established fan base of the Bungaku Shoujo series, praised for its faithful adherence to the whimsical, bibliophilic tone that defined Nomura's original writing.
