Bunna yo Ki kara Oritekoi

Bunna yo Ki kara Oritekoi, released in 1987, is an animated feature film produced by the renowned Gakken studio. Based on the celebrated children's novel by Tsutomu Mizukami, the story follows the existential and philosophical journey of a frog who chooses to leave his tree to explore the wider world. The film is characterized by its thoughtful, meditative pacing and its exploration of themes regarding life, death, and the nature of existence, distinguishing it from more action-oriented animation of the era.

The film's visual identity was shaped by the direction of Yoichi Maeda, who sought to capture the ethereal, rustic atmosphere of the Japanese countryside. The character designs remain faithful to the introspective spirit of Mizukami’s original text, emphasizing fluid, naturalistic movement over commercial flashiness. Upon its release, the film garnered respect for its artistic integrity and remains a poignant example of mid-1980s Japanese independent animation that prioritized storytelling and atmosphere.
