At the end of Arcadia of My Youth Capitain Harlock and the crew of the space ship Arcadia had been banished from Earth. The Earth, as well as many other planets in the universe had been taken over by the Illumidus, a race of destructive humanoids who ruin, enslave or destroy almost any inhabitable planet they come across. In "Endless Orbit SSX" Harlock battles the Illumidus while searching for a mythical "Planet of Peace" where all the peoples of the universe can live freely and without war.

Where it came from
Released in 1982, Arcadia of My Youth: Endless Orbit SSX serves as the direct television sequel to the feature film Arcadia of My Youth. Produced by Toei Animation, the series was designed to expand upon the melancholic, space-faring mythos created by manga artist Leiji Matsumoto. It explores Captain Harlock’s ongoing resistance against the Illumidus Empire, grounding his legendary status in a narrative of persistent rebellion and the search for the mythical Planet of Peace.
The series remains a quintessential example of the distinct aesthetic developed by Matsumoto during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Characterized by elongated, elegant character designs and the romanticized depiction of starships like the Arcadia, the series utilized a melancholic color palette and dramatic framing to emphasize the loneliness of space. At the time of its broadcast, it was received as a definitive chapter in the Harlock canon, helping solidify the character as an enduring icon of Japanese science fiction.
