Where it came from
Case Closed: High School Girl Detective Sonoko Suzuki's Case Files is a spin-off original video animation produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha, centered on the popular supporting character Sonoko Suzuki. Released during the height of the franchise's late-1990s expansion, these shorts were designed to highlight the humorous and often overlooked investigative side of Sonoko, moving away from the typical perspective of series protagonist Shinichi Kudo to offer a lighter, episodic take on the mystery genre.
The animation reflects the aesthetic standards of the late 1990s Case Closed television series, maintaining the character designs established by Gosho Aoyama. By placing a recurring secondary character in the lead role, the production aimed to deepen audience engagement with the broader ensemble cast. It was received as a charming diversion by fans of the series, serving as a character-focused study that utilizes the familiar tropes of high school drama and amateur sleuthing that define the Detective Conan universe.
