Where it came from
Case File nº221: Kabukicho originated as an original television anime series produced by Production I.G, which aired in 2019. The series reimagines the classic Sherlock Holmes archetypes within the neon-lit, chaotic landscape of Tokyo’s Kabukicho district. This OVA, released in 2020, serves as an extension of that narrative, further exploring the eccentricities of the detectives operating out of the fictional Sherlock Holmes Agency.
The production sought to blend traditional mystery-solving tropes with a gritty, character-driven aesthetic characteristic of the studio’s modern work. Under the direction of Ai Yoshimura, the design team aimed to balance the dark humor of the original series with the complex, episodic storytelling typical of the mystery genre. While the series received varied critical responses regarding its pacing and tone, it remains a notable example of late-2010s efforts to modernize classic literary detectives through an urban, noir lens.
