Chotto Ugoku!? "Futeneko"

The Chotto Ugoku!? Futeneko short animation was produced by Aniplex to celebrate the whimsical and cynical character Futeneko, originally created by the manga artist Ashura Beni. The character, known for his nonchalant and often melancholic demeanor, became a cult icon in Japan for his relatable indifference toward the complexities of daily life. This OVA format was intended to bring Beni's static, expressive drawings to life through subtle, loop-based animation that captured the character's signature laid-back personality.

The design of the animation leans heavily into the minimalist, sketch-like aesthetic of the source manga, prioritizing the character's idiosyncratic expressions over elaborate backgrounds or movement. It was well-received by fans of the original manga who appreciated the production's faithfulness to the source material's tone. By focusing on short, vignette-style storytelling, the production successfully translated the essence of a graphic novel character into a digital, moving medium while maintaining the dry humor that defines the franchise.
