Where it came from
Chrome Shelled Regios was adapted from a Japanese light novel series written by Shūsuke Amagi and illustrated by Miyū. Produced by the studio Zexcs and released in 2009, the series was part of a wave of post-apocalyptic fantasy anime that explored isolated city-states in a desolate world. Funimation acquired the license for North American distribution, bringing the show to Western audiences during a period of rapid expansion for digital streaming and localized home media releases.
The narrative follows Layfon Alseif as he joins a city-state protected by mobile domes, blending high-concept science fiction with martial arts combat. The production team aimed to capture the intricate world-building of the source material while emphasizing the kinetic energy of the Regios combat system. Upon its release, the series was received as a solid addition to the seinen genre, praised for its unique environmental setting and the character development of its central protagonist.
