Where it came from
Chuanyue Huoxian: Youling Jihua, known internationally as Crossfire: Ghost Project, was released in 2017 as a CGI-animated web series based on the popular tactical first-person shooter franchise Crossfire. Produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures, the series was designed to expand the intellectual property's narrative footprint within the Chinese market, tapping into the massive player base of the original game while leveraging advanced motion-capture animation techniques.
The project aimed to translate the fast-paced, military-themed action of the video game into a serialized storytelling format. It was met with significant attention from the domestic gaming community, serving as an early example of Tencent's efforts to bridge the gap between their digital gaming catalog and long-form entertainment media. While it faced critiques common to video game adaptations regarding character development, it remains a notable entry in the evolution of transmedia projects originating from the Chinese gaming industry.
