Where it came from
Computer Obaa-chan was produced by NHK for the long-running musical variety program Minna no Uta, debuting in 1997. The segment was created to reflect the growing ubiquity of personal computing in Japanese households during the late nineties, presenting a humorous and affectionate vision of an elderly woman who embraces the digital age with surprising technical prowess.
The animation and character design were crafted by the studio to contrast the warmth of traditional family life with the rigid, pixelated aesthetic of early home computing. It became a cultural touchstone due to its catchy synthesizer-heavy soundtrack and the unexpected charm of its protagonist, ultimately cementing its place as one of the most recognizable and fondly remembered shorts in the station's archive.
