Danyuan Meng Changjiu

Danyuan Meng Changjiu, or 'Dream of the Deer,' stands as a hallmark of the Shanghai Animation Film Studio’s golden era in the early 1980s. Released in 1981, this production was a sophisticated exploration of traditional Chinese folklore, specifically drawing from the Dunhuang murals. It was crafted during a period when the studio was striving to harmonize technical innovation with a distinctively national artistic style, moving away from purely didactic storytelling toward evocative, painterly animation.

The film is celebrated for its unique visual aesthetic, which employed the studio’s proprietary ink-wash animation technique. By capturing the fluidity of traditional brushwork, the animators, led by directors Qian Jiajun and Dai Tielang, created a dreamlike atmosphere that mirrored the elegance of ancient aesthetics. It received critical acclaim for its artistic integrity and remains a significant case study in how the studio successfully adapted static heritage art into a medium defined by motion and depth.
