Dara-san of the Reiwa Era

Dara-san of the Reiwa Era was produced by Asahi Production and released in 2026 as a contemporary television adaptation of the classic Japanese horror manga series. The project was conceived to modernize the eerie, folkloric storytelling of the original work for a new generation, balancing traditional supernatural dread with the high-definition animation standards characteristic of modern Japanese studios. It emerged during a period where horror anime saw a resurgence in mainstream appeal, driven by a desire to explore psychological and atmospheric scares rather than relying solely on action-heavy narratives.

The character design and visual direction were crafted to maintain the unsettling essence of the source material while utilizing digital compositing to enhance the oppressive, shadows-heavy environment. The creative team aimed to ground the supernatural elements in the mundane setting of current-day Japan, creating a juxtaposition intended to make the horror feel more accessible and immediate to viewers. Upon its release, the series was noted by critics for its faithful adherence to the source's thematic weight and its successful translation of static manga panels into fluid, kinetic animation.
