Where it came from
Dear Brother, known in Japan as Oniisama e..., was produced by the animation studio TMS Entertainment and aired on NHK in 1991. The series is a faithful adaptation of the classic shoujo manga by Riyoko Ikiyo, the renowned creator of The Rose of Versailles. Set within the rigid, high-pressure environment of an elite girls' academy, the narrative explores themes of intense emotional connection, social hierarchy, and the complexities of adolescent identity.
The series is celebrated for its distinctive visual style, characterized by dramatic lighting, ornate character designs, and the quintessential shoujo aesthetic of the era, which emphasizes interiority and emotional atmosphere. Directed by Osamu Dezaki, the anime utilizes his signature artistic techniques—such as 'postcard memories' and sharp, painterly shadows—to elevate the source material's melodramatic undertones. While its challenging subject matter initially limited its domestic broadcast reach, it has since been recognized as a seminal work in the genre for its sophisticated approach to storytelling.
