Where it came from
Released in 2020, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train serves as a direct continuation of the first season of the anime adaptation of Koyoharu Gotouge’s manga. Produced by the animation studio ufotable, the film was conceived to bridge the narrative gap between the series' initial arc and its subsequent chapters, focusing on the fan-favorite Flame Hashira, Kyojuro Rengoku. It became a cultural phenomenon, eventually becoming the highest-grossing film of all time in Japan and the highest-grossing anime film globally.
The film is defined by ufotable’s signature aesthetic, which seamlessly blends traditional hand-drawn character animation with complex 3D digital cinematography and particle effects. Directed by Haruo Sotozaki, the production emphasized high-fidelity action sequences and emotional storytelling to elevate the source material's intensity. Upon its release, it was widely praised by critics and audiences alike for its visual ambition, contributing significantly to the international mainstreaming of contemporary Japanese animation.
