Where it came from
The Demoness of Dreams, released by the independent studio BOOTLEG in 2017, emerged during a resurgence of interest in low-budget, experimental direct-to-video animation. Produced as an original video animation, the project was intended to challenge conventional storytelling tropes by blending surrealist imagery with a dark, melancholic aesthetic that favored mood over traditional narrative progression.
The design and illustration were spearheaded by the studio's core creative team, who sought to capture the uncanny quality of independent horror media from the late 20th century. By utilizing a deliberate, retro-inspired visual style, the creators aimed to evoke a sense of nostalgia while providing a starkly modern psychological commentary. Upon its limited release, the work was received as a niche cult object, recognized primarily by enthusiasts of independent animation for its unconventional technical execution and stark thematic tone.
