It’s 2012, and ten years have passed since the adventure in the Digital World. Daisuke Motomiya is now twenty, and he and the rest of the DigiDestined seem to be changing bit by bit in terms of appearance and lifestyle. Then one day, a giant Digitama suddenly appears in the sky over Tokyo Tower. Daisuke and the others encounter a mysterious young man named Lui Ohwada, who informs them that he’s the first ever DigiDestined in the world…

Where it came from
Released in October 2023, Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning serves as a direct cinematic conclusion to the narrative arcs established in the 2000 television series Digimon Adventure 02. Produced by Toei Animation, the film was designed to bridge the gap between the nostalgic roots of the original DigiDestined and the mature, character-driven storytelling seen in the more recent Tri and Kizuna projects. The production aimed to provide closure for the 02 cast, specifically centering on the mystery surrounding the first human to form a partnership with a Digimon.
Directed by Tomohisa Taguchi with screenplay by Akatsuki Yamatoya, the film reflects a shift toward a more introspective tone than the original series. The visual design retains the classic character aesthetic updated for modern digital animation standards, emphasizing a sense of continuity. Critical reception was generally positive among long-time fans of the franchise, who praised the film for its emotional depth and for finally addressing long-standing questions regarding the lore of the Digimon partner origins.
