Where it came from
Released in 2010 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Doraemon film series, Doraemon: Nobita's Great Mermaid Naval Battle represents the 30th installment in the long-running franchise. Produced by Shin-Ei Animation, the film serves as a landmark entry that shifts the classic adventure template toward an undersea fantasy setting, drawing heavily on the imaginative tone established by original creator Fujiko F. Fujio.
The film was directed by Kōzō Kusuba and features a screenplay by Yūichi Shinbō, who aimed to blend traditional environmental themes with a high-stakes seafaring narrative. Upon its release, it was well-received by audiences for its visual departure from previous entries, particularly its intricate depictions of the underwater city, and it performed strongly at the Japanese box office, continuing the franchise's enduring cultural relevance.
