Dr. Slump and Arale-chan: Hoyoyo! Dream Metropolitan Mecha Police

Released in 1985, Hoyoyo! Dream Metropolitan Mecha Police serves as the third feature-length film in the Dr. Slump series. The project emerged at the height of the franchise's popularity, capitalizing on the whimsical, high-energy tone established by Akira Toriyama in his original manga. Produced by Toei Animation, the film was designed to bring the comedic chaos of Penguin Village to a wider cinematic audience, further solidifying the cultural impact of Arale Norimaki as a quintessential 1980s pop culture icon.

The film’s aesthetic reflects the signature blend of mechanical invention and slapstick humor that defined Toriyama’s work during this period. Characterized by vibrant, rounded designs and a surreal narrative structure, the production was intended to showcase the technical capabilities of the studio while adhering to the lighthearted, subversive spirit of the source material. It was received warmly by fans who were already deeply invested in the weekly television series, and it remains a representative example of the studio's mid-eighties output.
