Where it came from
Dragon Pilot: Hisone and Masotan was produced by Studio Bones and released in 2018 as an original anime series. It was created by director Shinji Higuchi and screenwriter Mari Okada, who sought to blend the grounded, bureaucratic reality of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force with the fantastical concept of dragons hidden within military aircraft. The series emerged from a desire to explore the emotional connection between a young, socially awkward recruit and the mythical creature she is tasked to pilot.
The character designs were originally drafted by manga artist Toshinao Aoki before being adapted for animation by Yoshiyuki Ito. The production aimed for a distinct aesthetic that balanced whimsical, soft-edged dragon designs against the rigid, technical details of actual military jets. Upon release, the series was well-received for its unique premise and its sensitive, humorous approach to interpersonal communication, standing out as a creative departure from standard mecha and fantasy tropes.
