Where it came from
Duel Masters VS launched in 2014 as the fifth installment in the long-running Duel Masters anime franchise, produced by the studio Ascension. Following the conclusion of the previous series, VS served as a soft reboot that shifted the narrative focus back to a high-school setting while introducing a new protagonist, Katta Kirifuda. The series was designed to revitalize interest in the trading card game by integrating more dynamic, modern animation styles and incorporating the latest card mechanics introduced in the real-world Duel Masters TCG.
The production sought to balance the franchise's trademark humor with intense, fast-paced dueling sequences, moving away from some of the darker undertones of its predecessor. Artistically, the series emphasized character expressions and exaggerated card-battle effects to appeal to a younger demographic. Upon its release, it was received as a standard but energetic entry in the series, praised by fans for its return to the core identity of the Duel Masters brand while expanding the roster of colorful, quirky characters that defined the show's later years.
