Where it came from
Elle was released in 2001 by NuTech Digital as part of a wave of early 2000s adult-oriented original video animation (OVA) titles. The project emerged during a period when domestic distributors were actively acquiring Japanese content to serve the burgeoning DVD market, often focusing on stylized animation and experimental storytelling to capture the attention of a growing niche of international viewers.
The production sought to blend traditional animation techniques with the digital compositing trends that defined the era's technical transition. While the title reflects the aesthetic sensibilities and creative output common to NuTech Digital’s catalog at the time, it remains a product of a specific distribution climate where smaller studios aimed to carve out an identity through direct-to-video releases aimed at mature audiences.
