Where it came from
Eternal Boys, known in Japan as Eien no 831, was produced by the animation studio LIDENFILMS and released in 2022. The series emerged from a collaborative multimedia project designed to explore the concept of middle-aged men pursuing their aspirations to become pop idols. This narrative departure from the youth-dominated idol genre aimed to provide a grounded yet aspirational story about finding purpose and reinvention during mid-life, reflecting themes of perseverance and personal growth in adulthood.
The character designs were developed to distinguish the protagonists from traditional idol archetypes, focusing on mature features while maintaining the aesthetic appeal characteristic of contemporary anime. Upon its release, the series was noted for its unique premise and its lighthearted approach to the challenges of the music industry. It was received as a niche but heartfelt contribution to the genre, praised by audiences for its focus on camaraderie and the dignity of pursuing new dreams later in life.
